Why Intention Without Alignment Creates More Frustration (And What To Do Instead)
By Katie Joy, The Global Butterfly
Have You Ever Felt Like You’re Doing Everything Right… Yet Nothing’s Working?
You’ve set your intentions. You’ve got your vision board. You’ve written your affirmations. You’ve even taken inspired action.
And yet… nothing seems to be shifting. You’re still stuck in the same place, feeling frustrated, drained, and wondering, “What am I doing wrong?”
I get it.
I’ve been there too — putting my heart and soul into what I thought was the right path, only to find myself feeling more confused and disconnected than ever.
Here’s what I learned:
It’s not about how hard you’re trying or how many intentions you set. It’s about whether those intentions are truly aligned with your soul’s deepest desires.
And that’s where most people get stuck.
Let’s dive into why intention without alignment creates more frustration — and how to start making real, lasting shifts instead.
The Trap of Setting Misaligned Intentions
Setting intentions is powerful. But setting intentions that aren’t aligned with your soul is like planting seeds in the wrong soil.
No matter how much you water them, they’re not going to grow.
You see, intentions without alignment are often rooted in:
-
Fear: Wanting something because you’re scared of not having it.
-
Expectation: Chasing goals because society tells you that’s what success looks like.
-
Ego: Trying to prove your worth through achievement.
When your intentions are driven by fear, external validation, or the need to prove something, they create resistance. It’s like trying to force a river to flow upstream.
You end up feeling exhausted, frustrated, and disillusioned because your energy is working against itself.
Real Talk: Why “Manifesting” Sometimes Feels Like a Battle
There’s a reason why manifestation sometimes feels like pushing a boulder uphill.
It’s not because you’re not doing enough. It’s because your energy and your actions are misaligned.
Imagine setting an intention to manifest more clients in your business. You visualise it, write it down, and even take some steps toward it.
But deep down, if you’re carrying an unconscious belief that you’re not worthy of success or that more clients will lead to burnout, guess what?
Your intention and your underlying belief are in direct conflict.
The result?
Your intention doesn’t manifest because your energy is sending mixed signals to the universe.
The Difference Between Ego Intentions and Soul Intentions
When I work with my clients, one of the first things I help them do is discern whether their intentions are truly soul-led or ego-driven.
Here’s how you can tell the difference:
Ego Intentions | Soul Intentions |
---|---|
Feel heavy, pressured, or urgent | Feel light, expansive, and aligned |
Driven by fear of lack or failure | Rooted in love, purpose, and genuine desire |
Focus on proving something or gaining validation | Focus on feeling fulfilled and living in alignment |
Create resistance and burnout | Create ease, flow, and a sense of peace |
Take a moment to think about your current intentions.
Are they truly what your soul wants? Or are they driven by external expectations or a need to prove yourself?
How To Align Your Intentions with Your Soul
Alignment doesn’t mean abandoning your dreams. It means choosing them from a place of truth and inner guidance.
Here’s how to recalibrate your intentions so they actually work for you:
1. Check In with Your Heart
Ask yourself:
-
Does this intention feel heavy or light?
-
Am I pursuing this because I truly want it, or because I think I should want it?
-
Does this goal energise me or drain me?
If your intention feels forced or obligatory, it’s time to dig deeper.
2. Dig into Your “Why”
If your intention is to make more money, ask yourself why.
Is it because you genuinely desire more freedom and opportunity?
Or is it because you feel like you’re not good enough until you hit a specific financial milestone?
When you get clear on your “why,” you can filter out intentions that aren’t truly aligned.
Your soul’s desires are rooted in love, joy, purpose, and expansion — not fear, lack, or validation.
3. Realign Your Actions
Sometimes the intention is right, but the way you’re approaching it needs tweaking.
For example, if your intention is to create more balance, but you keep overcommitting to work, your actions are out of sync.
Alignment means being intentional not just with your goals but with the way you move toward them.
Ask yourself:
-
What small changes can I make today to align my actions with my soul’s desire for balance?
-
How can I make my process feel lighter and more joyful?
Real Story: From Hustle to Alignment
One of my clients, Rachel, came to me feeling overwhelmed. She kept setting intentions to grow her new business, but no matter how hard she worked, things just didn’t click.
During the Soul Goal Mapping Challenge, she realised that her intention was rooted in fear of failure and pressure to succeed.
Once she realigned her goal from “I need to prove I can make this work” to “I choose to build a business that supports my soul and well-being,” things shifted.
She started feeling more motivated, less pressured, and opportunities started flowing in with greater ease.
Your Turn: Set Intentions That Light You Up
If you’ve been feeling stuck or frustrated despite your best efforts, it’s time to check in with your soul.
Your intentions should feel like a gentle invitation to grow — not a demand to be more or do more.
To help you tune in and set intentions that truly align, I’ve created the Setting Your Intentions Workbook.
It’s designed to guide you through the process of identifying what you truly want, why you want it, and how to move forward with purposeful, aligned action.
