The Power of Appreciation: How Positive Reviews Elevate Businesses & Lives
By Katie Joy The Global Butterfly

In a world where online reviews can make or break a business, appreciation is often overlooked. Many people are quick to voice complaints but slow to express gratitude. Yet, taking a moment to acknowledge great service, a well-crafted product, or an outstanding experience not only uplifts those providing it but also contributes to a culture of kindness, generosity, and excellence.

As an entrepreneur, business owner, and leadership coach bridging spirituality and strategy in life and business, I understand the power of appreciation and how it directly influences the success and energy of individuals and businesses. A simple positive review can create a ripple effect of goodwill, motivation, and business growth.

Here’s why sharing gratitude through positive feedback is essential and how you can make it a habit that benefits not just businesses, but your own mindset and energy.

The Moore and Moore Café Experience

Recently, I had brunch at Moore and Moore Café, and my experience there was nothing short of extraordinary.

First, they allowed dogs anywhere in the restaurant, which meant my puppy could sit with me and my son—an inclusive and welcoming gesture that made the visit even more enjoyable. The energy of the café was buzzing, not just with people but with happy people. There was a lightness, a joy, a vibrancy to the space that set it apart.

But what stood out most was the service. From the moment I arrived, Simon, the owner, greeted me with kindness and helped me find a seat. Unlike some business owners who carry an air of superiority, Simon was right there alongside his team, assisting customers with humility and care.

The young man at the counter, Ethan, was attentive, patient, and fully present. When I asked if they had Stevia, he initially thought they didn’t but took the initiative to find a suitable alternative—Agave Syrup. Moments later, the barista herself came to my table with a warm smile, saying, “We actually do have Stevia! Would you like some?” Her enthusiasm and attentiveness made all the difference.

The food was fresh, beautifully plated, and made with high-quality ingredients like free-range eggs and bacon—a rare find in many cafés. The interior was a mix of eclectic art, lush greenery, and vintage-style furniture, creating an Alice in Wonderland-like atmosphere.

I felt compelled to share my appreciation not just with the staff but also publicly through a Google and Facebook review. I told Simon how much I valued his leadership and the warm, attentive culture he had cultivated. His humble smile and heartfelt “Thank you. That really means a lot” spoke volumes.

This moment reminded me how rare it is for people to take the time to express their gratitude.

Why Most People Don’t Leave Positive Reviews

Despite enjoying great experiences, many people hesitate to leave positive reviews. Why?

  1. Lack of Awareness & Communication Skills
Many haven’t trained themselves to focus on what they appreciate. Instead, they stay stuck in a mindset of lack—focused on what’s missing rather than celebrating what’s good.

  2. Perfectionism
Some believe they need to experience everything before leaving a review—like thinking they must try every dish on the menu before sharing their appreciation. In reality, a single great experience is worth celebrating.

  3. Limited Understanding of Business Challenges
Many customers (and even some business owners) don’t realize the effort, dedication, and sacrifice required to run a business. They consume without considering the hard work behind the scenes.

Even entrepreneurs often fail to recognise the impact reviews have on reputation and growth. If more people understood this, they’d be more generous with their words of appreciation.

How Positive Feedback Creates Meaningful Opportunities

Leaving a review isn’t just about supporting businesses—it’s about creating genuine human connections. A recent experience with Harri, a young employee at Telstra, reinforced this truth.

Harri had been working at the store for just six weeks when he helped me navigate a complicated phone upgrade issue that had been blocked due to a previous employee’s error. Even when his out-of-store manager dismissed my case, Harri persisted, advocating for a fair resolution. His customer service was exceptional, his attitude was incredible, and his presence was unwavering.

We connected deeply during that time, exchanging life experiences and business insights. By the end of our interaction, Harri was so inspired that he purchased one of my online programs, The Money Game – Mind It! Make It! Manage It! Multiply It!. Since then, we’ve built a lasting friendship. I later returned to the store just to check in, and we exchanged a heartfelt hug.

I left a glowing online review, which his manager personally acknowledged in an email. This act of appreciation not only validated Harri’s efforts but also reinforced the power of recognising great service.

The Impact of Constructive Feedback

While appreciation is essential, constructive feedback is equally valuable—when given with kindness and a solution-oriented mindset.

Recently, I had to address a service failure at a local recreation center. Instead of lashing out, I documented the incident, outlined the challenges, and offered practical solutions. By approaching the situation with clear communication and professionalism, I was able to advocate for better service while maintaining mutual respect.

Not all businesses will listen, but the wise ones will. Those who ignore feedback miss a crucial opportunity for growth.

The Energy of Appreciation: A Higher Frequency of Life & Business

Gratitude isn’t just about recognising others—it’s a reflection of you. How you see the world, how you engage with it, and the energy you bring to your experiences. Choosing to focus on appreciation raises your frequency and attracts more positive interactions into your life.

Leaving a positive review, sharing kind words, or simply saying “thank you” with intention creates a ripple effect that elevates everyone involved.

Actionable Steps: How to Build a Habit of Appreciation & Leave Meaningful Reviews

Want to start making a difference? Here are some simple yet impactful ways to cultivate appreciation:

  • Make it a habit – After a great experience, take 2-3 minutes to leave a review while it's fresh in mind, and before you forget.

  • Be specific – Instead of just saying, “Great service,” mention what made it special (e.g., “Ethan went out of his way to find an alternative sweetener for me, which showed real care and attention”).

  • Balance constructive feedback with solutions – If something could be improved, offer thoughtful suggestions instead of just complaining.

  • Practice gratitude daily – Recognise and verbalise what you appreciate in all aspects of life, not just in business.

Conclusion: The Challenge

I invite you to join me in shifting the energy of the world—one review at a time.
