How Your Core Beliefs Shape Your Reality (and How to Change Them)
by Katie Joy, The Global Butterfly

Have you ever stopped to wonder if the beliefs you hold about yourself, others, and life are quietly shaping your reality? Whether we notice it or not, our core beliefs act as an invisible force, filtering the world through lenses we've often accepted without question. The good news? Once identified, we can shift these beliefs to create a life that’s aligned with our highest goals and values.

In today’s blog, I’m diving into the power of core beliefs, why they matter, and how you can start transforming them right now.

What Are Core Beliefs, and Why Do They Matter?

Core beliefs are deeply ingrained perceptions about ourselves, others, and the world. They’re like a blueprint that’s been shaped by our life experiences, cultural messages, and even our family environments. These beliefs run in the background, influencing how we interpret situations, make decisions, and even how we set and achieve our goals.

Often, we’re not even aware of these beliefs, but they manifest in our behaviours and choices. For example, if you believe that success is hard to attain, you might unconsciously avoid risks or sabotage your efforts, reaffirming the belief. On the flip side, when your beliefs are positive and empowering, they can be the catalyst for growth, resilience, and joy.

Core Belief Discovery: Start Uncovering Your Deepest Beliefs

If you’re curious about which core beliefs might be affecting your life, start by asking yourself these four powerful questions. This is the first step to uncovering the beliefs that could be holding you back or, better yet, empowering you to reach new heights.

Here are the four key questions to ask yourself:

  1. What do I believe is true?
(Think about areas like money, success, love, or even personal worth. Be honest—write down what first comes to mind.)

  2. What do I believe is NOT true?
(These are often the limitations we’ve internalised. Maybe you feel certain achievements aren’t for “people like you” or that “good things never last.”)

  3. What do I believe is available to/for me?
(This question opens the door to understanding what you feel is within reach in your life—love, abundance, or personal growth, for example.)

  4. What do I believe is NOT available to/for me?
(These are the blocks you may have placed on yourself, often out of past disappointments or societal conditioning.)

Digging Deeper with Follow-Up Questions

Once you’ve identified some core beliefs, take things further with these follow-up questions. They’ll help you uncover what’s needed to align your beliefs with the life you truly want to live.

  • What version of me do I need to be to align with my goal outcome?
(Imagine the version of yourself who already has what you desire. How would they think, act, and feel?)

  • What would I need to believe is true?
(Think about the beliefs that would support your goal—do you need to believe in your worth, capability, or resilience?)

  • What would I need to let go of believing is NOT true?
(This is all about releasing limiting beliefs, such as “success isn’t for people like me” or “I’m not good enough.”)

  • What would I need to believe is available to/for me?
(Perhaps you need to see that abundance, support, and love are accessible to you as you are, without having to prove anything.)
